Buh-bye, Budapest and Frankfurt

This was the first time we have seen sun since Prague - and we had to get above the clouds to see it!

Lemme say that the Budapest airport was a cluster. They do not have adequate staffing for the number of people going through it. Things were okay past security, but before that was a mess. I’m all for kiosks for people who know how to use them. Otherwise, you just need human assistance.

Maybe after all of the Boomers are dead would be a good time to implement those.

The flight to Frankfurt kept getting delayed, but since we didn’t have to make a connection, we didn’t really care. We opted to stay at the Marriott at the airport, since we were meeting Cody there at the airport, and it was great. Can recommend.

Cannot recommend the specificity of signs *to* the Marriott. When Lazzy was a toddler, we would pick him up and he would tell us which way to go. “Dis way, Pop/Momo!“ followed quickly by “Dat way, Pop/Momo!” and we would switch directions at the commands. That’s what it was like going through the airport, trying to figure out where the hell the freaking hotel was. We went dis way and dat way and finally asked someone for help.

Cody’s flight out of DTW was late, and he had only an hour’s layover in Reykjavik, but he made it. Also, he had bid (and won) to fly in 1st class, so he was flying high. (See what I did there?) Once he found his way to the car rental place, we got our car and played Tetris to get all bags to fit.

Then we were on the road, with [grandma] Dan driving. I was reminded of how much we laughed when my family of origin traveled Germany for the first time and saw their highway exit signs. (I was with two teenage boys and a tween boy, and they thought that this was high-larious.)

We found a restaurant on the way to Trier where we could grab a bite. I think that it was a truck stop, but the bolognese that I had and the wiener schnitzel that Dan and Cody had were all good fare. It’s called Jayme’s and worth a stop if you’re in the neighborhood.

Currently, Dan is driving in the dark to Trier. Cody is snoozing in the backseat, and I’m using my data to post this. We will be back to report on Trier tomorrow!

Dan here.

All I have to add to this is breakfast before leaving Budapest.

First, Vicki joined me in posing for a photo as we have seen so many others doing.

It really is funny - and often aggravating - to watch these people seeking the perfect pose in front of a cathedral or an amazing vista or a dog park. We have joined the fray.

What was not funny but was delicious was my breakfast. I have had and made a lot of French toast. It is almost always a sweet breakfast. But this one was savory and out of this world. I will be working on my savory french toast when we return home.

Tomorrow, we get to see some old-time Germany. Trier has Roman ruins dating back to the 1st century AD. That is even older than some of our friends!
