Sunday in Strasbourg

Today, we got up and drove to a bakery about 15 minutes down the road for breakfast. Fresh croissants, a pastry, and coffee - plus a couple of pretzels for the road.

It was very foggy, but that started to lift and by the time we crossed into God's country - France - we had full sunshine and a view of farmlands, and small villages set into a hillside.

Leaving Germany, we saw a large number of wind turbines. Germany's renewable energy is well above the EU average, with wind power providing 28% of their electricity and solar providing 15%. France is even better, with wind power providing 33% and solar providing 23%. Pretty awesome. Why can't the U.S. aspire to do that?

We made our way to Strasbourg, dumped our things, and headed out for the day. Strasbourg is delightful, and for me, it was wonderful to be back in France. A former Honors French student of mine, John Steffan, has spent a large amount of time here, and he gave me several recommendations on things to do and where to eat. He pointed us to a Tibetan restaurant, which was tiny and full, so we moved on to another of his places, an Indian restaurant, which was right on the market and was very good.

The Christmas market in Strasbourg was the best one yet.

The cathedrale looms over the main market.

Strasbourg is just a wonderful place.

On our way back to the hotel, we found out that the man who made mime famous, Marcel Marceau, was born here. I got to see him while I was at Millsaps College.

After dinner, we returned to the area to see the lights at night.
